Infantile Eczema Home Treatment

By adam eric at 2011-01-20 01:54:22
Infantile eczema is a rather common condition, but it is something that can cause a lot of distress for the parents. You can often be comforted by simply knowing that in many cases, the eczema simply disappears before the baby is two years old but that does not give your child much relief while you are waiting. There are some things that you can do to treat infantile eczema and to help it to go away as quickly as possible.

The problem is; lots of doctors recommend creams and lotions that contain powerful steroids and other nasty chemicals. And, as a responsible parent, you may not desire to use some of these possibly dangerous chemical solutions. In the next section, I have listed a couple cures for infantile eczema that are powerful enough to work, but safe enough for your child.

Unfortunately, the specific cause of eczema is unknown, but according to the NIH, "the disease seems to result from a combination of genetic (hereditary) and environmental factors." It appears that allergies and immune system disorders are associated with eczema, and that stress can cause eczema outbreaks in people who have inherited the tendency for the condition. Environmental irritants that can trigger or exacerbate outbreaks include dust, cigarette smoke, wool or synthetic clothing fibers, soaps, cosmetics, and household chemicals.

Although eczema is not contagious, its most irritating aspect, apart from the unseemly appearance it gives to the skin, is the persistent itching that occurs. It can be bad enough to disturb sleep. The causes of eczema are usually attributed to allergens to which the skin reacts adversely. Although it is not definite, eczema is an inherited condition in some people. Eczema flare-ups is a recurring symptom, characterised by inflammations. The flare-ups in infants occur in specific areas such as the face, esp. the forehead and cheeks and often, it clears by puberty.

Baby eczema treatment includes moisturizing the baby's skin regularly and applying topical anti-inflammatory medications. The child should also be bathed daily and even twice a day if possible in lukewarm water for a short time. Children having a severe rash may find that the water stings or burns. To avoid this, add half a cup of table salt to a tub full of water. Avoid soap and do not scrub the child's skin.

The best eczema treatment aims to prevent itching, inflammation, and worsening of the condition. It involves both - a change in lifestyle and using medicines. The most important thing is to keep the skin well hydrated by applying creams or ointments which have a low water and high oil content. It is also important to avoid over-bathing. There are certain triggers that cause eczema. Some modifications in our ways of living are also recommended to avoid these triggers.

One very common type of newborn eczema is baby cradle cap. This condition, otherwise called seborrhoeic dermatitis, causes peeling on the scalp that can be either dry or greasy and can extend to the eyebrows and in extreme cases to the trunk of the body. Cradle cap babies will have a yellow, crusty scalp rash that may look unsightly but is curable.

Eczema is usually a persistent, itchy skin condition consisting of skin dryness and inflammation (manifested by redness of the skin, crusting and thickening of the skin). Eczema is an inflammation of the skin and may be associated with an allergic reaction, although the cause is often unknown. Eczema is a commonly inherited condition; it often affects people with a family history of allergies, such as allergic rhinitis and asthma.

There are a variety of causes of eczema. While Atopic eczema occurs due to genetic problems, contact eczema occurs due to skin's sensitivity towards external factors. Atopic eczema is hereditary - it travels through genes and in such cases, people are sensitive to the allergens present in the environment that are otherwise harmless to others.
