Osgoode Schlatter Disease Treatment

By adam eric at 2011-01-22 03:57:38
The Osgood-Schlatter Disease is claimed by some to not actually be a disease, but is rather a collection of symptoms that involves the tibial tubercle epiphysis. (The term epiphysis is essentially a growth center for bone). Discovered in 1903 by Dr. Robert Bayley Osgood and Dr. Carl Schlatter, Osgood-Schlatters Disease is often found among young athletes and children, mainly affecting boys and girls between 10-16 years of age.

Osgood Schlatter disease usually strikes boys in their pre-teens who are undergoing a growth spurt. It can also affect athletes, especially pre-teen athletes, and generally disappears once the growth spurt is over. It most often occurs in just one knee, but can occasionally happen in both knees at the same time.

Avoiding painful activities, ice application, and stretches may help ease symptoms. Exercises prescribed by your physical therapist can help to strengthen the bone, tendons and cartilage of the knee and reduce the incidence of flare ups. In some cases a brace may be required to ease tension on the patellar tendon.

Osgood-Schlatter disease usually occurs in just one knee, but sometimes it develops in both knees. It is felt that stress on the bone from the tendon tugging it during activities leads to Osgood-Schlatter disease. It is believed that Osgood-Schlatter disease results from the pull of the large powerful muscles in the front of the thigh (called the quadriceps).

Osgood Schlatter Disease, which is also known as tibial tubercle apophyseal traction injury, is basically when the growth plate ruptures, at the tibial tuberosity. It is most commonly seen in active children, particularly boys, and it can occur either with or without an injury. Osgood Schlatter Disease causes stress to the patellar tendon, and it is usually during growth spurts that the condition arises.

It usually occurs in children in the age group of 10-14 years especially those involved in running or jumping sports. It is almost 4 times commoner in boys than in girls. It is characterised by anterior knee pain and tenderness which worsens on activity. A typical feature is difficulty in kneeling down.

Osgood-Schlatter syndrome is the inflammation of the area just below the knee, where the tendon from the kneecap meets the shinbone. It can affect one or both knees. Osgood-Schlatter's syndrome tends to occur in active young adolescents, often during a growth spurt. At this time tendons grow quickly, but not always at the same rate, this can cause stress and injury to the growth plate at the top of the shinbone during exercise. The disease mainly affects boys, but as girls become more active in sports, they too are being affected.

Osgood-Schlatters disease is a traction apophysitis of the tibial tubercle of the knee and tends to affect athletically active adolescents during their secondary growth spurts1. It is a painful and extremely limiting condition and is the most common overuse injury in this age group2. The current standard treatment is to allow the athlete to self-manage pain and activity levels, but the documented history of this condition records patients having to refrain from physical activity for an average of 21 months3.

As practitioners of Chinese medicine we must be able to understand not only pathological factors but etiologies too. For example, a pathology leading to male factor infertility is low sperm count. Many TCM practitioners will automatically render treatment based upon the TCM diagnosis arrived at through the four examinations.

Have you heard of Osgood-Schlatter disease? It is a disorder that affects children. It is caused by too much pressure on the knees which produces pain and swelling. Another childhood problem is scoliosis, a problem that causes the spine to curve abnormally. The curvature measures 10 degrees or higher when seen from an xray. Another orthopedic problem is what doctors call "slipped femoral epiphysis" (a hip condition that affects children).

Excessive use or abuse of the joint, incorrect positioning during movement, inadequate warm up or cool down activity prior to and after exercise, and insufficient stretching are some of the physical causes of knee pain. Knee pain resulting from these simple causes may resolve on its own through rest and careful self-nurturing. However, excess weight or obesity can increase the risk of developing painful disorders of the knee.
