Perimenopause Treatment for Night Sweats

By adam eric at 2011-02-04 01:36:35
So what can be done to lessen the symptoms of perimenopause? First of all, you must realize by now that not all women have the same symptoms of menopause, nor do they have them at them age as every other woman. Some women don't experience these symptoms until much older, after 50 or so. Other women start perimenopause in their mid-thirties, although that is rare according to statistics. Why is this so? For several reasons, among them heredity, environment, eating habits, smoking habits, and just general lifestyle can affect the severity of symptoms a woman experiences.

Perimenopause is the time before the menopause when hormones in the body begin to fluctuate and cause a host of symptoms. The perimenopause can last anywhere between 5-15 years. It is common for women to suffer far more dramatic symptoms during the perimenopause than during the menopause. Often the symptoms are overlooked by many women as this is traditionally a busy time of their lives when they may have busy careers and growing children.

Night sweating would usually be caused by hot flashes or flushes. Once the body experiences a hot flash (hotness from the chest up to the face), the body quickly tries to regulate it by lowering the body's temperature - sort of like a cooling process for the body. This is where sweating comes in.

The safest way to bring the menopausal symptoms under control is by adopting healthier lifestyle changes. Although it may seem to be easy at first, keeping a check on your daily routine and eliminating possible catalysts of night sweats is harder than most people recognize.

Dress in layers so you can peel them off as you get warmer. Stick to loose clothing of cotton, linen or rayon and avoid synthetic fabrics and wool. Check into "Wicking Nightwear". These nightclothes are designed to whisk away sweat and moisture and keep you dry and comfortable while you sleep. Cotton sheets are best.

Come evening make sure that your bedroom is a comfortable place to sleep. Have a fan at the ready. Use light cotton material for your sheets as well as your pajamas. Keep a cloth and a chilled water bottle near the bed. That way, if you do wake up in a sweat you can wet it and cool yourself down without getting up.

Perimenopause averages 5 years for most women. Remember that for the women who will experience them, hot flashes typically start at the onset of perimenopause when sex hormone production in the ovaries begins to drop. Again, the average age of onset of perimenopause is ages 46, but there are reports of women entering perimenopause as young as 35.

The perimenopause is the time immediately before the menopause. It normally lasts around 3 years but for others, it can go on as long as 10 years. It may begin as early as 35 or perhaps earlier still for smokers. The gradual decrease of the hormone estrogen is the main cause of the symptoms.

There is no blueprint for perimenopause treatment because symptoms and their severity vary. Women who are in the perimenopausal stage often experience hot flashes, night sweat, sleeplessness, mood swings, changes in menstrual periods, feeling confused, thinning hair, body aches, fatigue and anxiety. The most common form of treatment is taking oral contraceptives.

One of the most common causes of night sweating is hot flashes related to menopause. Many women suffer from hot flashes well before starting menopause, in the period known as perimenopause. These hot flashes can be intense and cause heavy sweating, including while the patient is sleeping. Many women also are genetically disposed to sweating while sleeping.

Since menopause is a natural occurrence, it is not a type of illness at all. The decrease in female hormones such as estrogen and progesterone causes these uncomfortable changes. Also, during this time, fewer potential eggs are ripening in your ovaries each month, so ovulation is much less predictable. Your menstrual periods may become longer or shorter, heavier or lighter, and more or less frequent.
