Blocked Arteries Causes

By adam eric at 2011-02-17 01:08:19
Well in my opinion having clean, flexible, and healthy arteries is one of the keys to preventing heart attack and heart disease, and for living a long and healthy life. If you ignore the cleanliness and health of your arteries, you are like a walking time-bomb as at any moment a blockage could lead to severe heart damage, which may or may not be reversible.

Learning as much as you can about the various signs of blocked arteries, what causes them and the ways to prevent them, will give you an outstanding chance of protecting yourself against heart attacks, strokes, and sadly, in some cases, premature death.

Heart attacks and cardiovascular diseases are usually caused by clogged or blocked arteries, which is also called atherosclerosis in the medical field.

This complex, silent disease may not show itself for years, even decades. It usually begins in adolescence, remains asymptomatic, taking years to become detectable. The plaque build-up, artery damage, and ultimately the narrowing of the arteries from all these years of damage can show some signs, if the person is willing to test for it.

Arterial plaque deposits on the inside of the coronary arteries is what eventually results in the symptoms of blocked arteries. Plaque deposits begin when the once smooth inner lining of the arteries starts to become pitted or jagged. Some believe this damaged is caused by certain amino acids or perhaps blood cholesterol itself. Nevertheless, it starts the process which if left unrecognized and untreated will lead to a serious coronary event.

Where the blockage occurs will determine the signs. If the plaque deposit is reducing blood flow to the heart a tightness in the middle of the chest will be felt. This is known in medical terms as angina and those in denial will often simply write it off to a bad case of indigestion. Complicating the situation is that if the blockage is not too severe the chest tightness and/or pain will go away once they get home, get comfortable, and relax.

Arterial plaque is generally composed of fibrin, calcium, waste products like dead cells, fats, and cholesterol. When these start to accumulate inside the walls of your arteries, they will trigger the clogging or blocking of your arteries, causing restricted blood flow to vital organs. All of the arteries of the body have the risk of becoming blocked - your kidneys, brain, heart, arms, legs, liver, abdomen, and most other areas of your body.

Arteries are the vessels that carry blood away from the heart. They branch over and over again with the smallest arteries (or arterioles) being the furthest away. Arteries are somewhat stiff, but they also have elasticity and adapt to varying blood pressure. This elasticity is also important because it plays a role in the arteries' ability to store blood pumped with each heartbeat and then provide it to the capillaries.

A majority of the time, clogged up arteries manifest some specific symptoms. The unfortunate thing is, these symptoms only become apparent when a body part has already been affected. This means that there would already be decreased oxygenation to that body part when you start to feel the symptoms. By the time, the condition would be at its peak and it would be difficult to deal with as the plaque would already have done some damage to the body.

Some recent medical research has indicated that you can start developing clogged arteries in your teens and twenties. In the normal course of life no one will notice anything is wrong until they've nearly died from it. However we now know there are many ways to reduce the risk of developing dangerously clogged arteries and cardiovascular disease in general.

Efforts are then concentrated on keeping the opposite carotid as open as possible. A person can live a good life with only one open carotid artery. The body is smart enough to reroute blood via a complex network to the side of the brain that would normally get blood via the blocked carotid. A dietitian (check with her MD) could help you devise an eating plan that is healthy & affordable.work).

Clogged arteries are often referred to as "hardening of the arteries", but the proper term is atherosclerosis. It affects larger blood vessels, and is caused by the formation of plaques, or fatty buildups, on the inner surface of the arterial wall. As with a plumbing pipe in a region with hard water, arteries afflicted with atherosclerosis gradually have less and less flow until they are blocked completely, leading to a stroke or heart attack.
