Signs and Symptoms of Juvenile Diabetes

By adam eric at 2010-12-17 01:29:09
The increasing obesity epidemic among children today is thought to be a leading cause in the increase in juvenile diabetes in this country today. While not everyone agrees on the causes and affects it is hard to argue with the continuing increase of children with Type 2 diabetes who are also overweight. In fact as the percentages of obese children raises so does the percentage of those affected with juvenile diabetes at nearly the same rate.

symptoms of juvenile diabetes:

1. Frequent bathroom trips - High blood sugar increases the amount of blood that is filtered through the kidneys, leading to an increase in urinary output.

2. Being thirsty all the time - Dehydration caused by the high urine output leads to an increased thirst.

3. Increased hunger and eating - The lack of insulin keeps the sugar in the blood, starving the cells for the energy they need to function. Because of this perceived energy deficit the body responds with hunger pains.

4. Weight loss - Despite the fact that the child is eating more the body will start to break down it own muscle and fat stores to make up for the perceived loss of energy sources, namely blood glucose.

If you are noticing any of these symptoms you should definitely talk to your child's doctor to check for childhood diabetes. Your child could also experience symptoms of being pale and losing weight. They can often indicate other medical problems as well, so check with the child's doctor if any of the above become evident.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention one out of every 400-500 children has juvenile diabetes. Or, to put it another way, approximately 210,000 people under the age of 20 have juvenile diabetes. 15,000 kids are diagnosed with juvenile diabetes each year. Siblings of juvenile diabetics are, of course, at slightly higher risk of getting diabetes. If you already have a child with diabetes you are undoubtedly aware of the anxiety you have for your non-diabetic children.

Currently, the only effective treatment for Juvenile Diabetes is injected insulin. People with Juvenile Diabetes must inject insulin into their fatty tissue on a regular basis to control their blood sugar levels. While people with Type 2 Diabetes can sometimes control blood sugar levels with oral medications, diet and exercise, people with Juvenile Diabetes have to take insulin.

The exact cause of juvenile diabetes (Type 1 diabetes) is still unclear. The common belief is that juvenile diabetes is caused due to an insult to the immune system. This can be either infectious or toxic, which in turn causes the autoimmune response to alter pancreatic protein, resulting in inadequate insulin production. Let's make one thing perfectly clear, this type of diabetes is not caused by obesity or by eating excessive sugar. Children diagnosed with diabetes will require insulin injections for survival.

There are many people out there that only have information given to them by their primary doctor, with no training in how to care for and control Juvenile Diabetes. I am so grateful that my daughter's pediatrician was able to admit that her knowledge only extended to the very basics in diagnosing diabetes, and set us up with a pediatric endocrinologist.

The problem with not taking the juvenile diabetes signs seriously is that you might be putting yourself at risk of making the condition worse. The key is to allow your doctor to take the necessary tests that they need to do in order for them to be able to truly determine whether or not you have juvenile diabetes. This will in turn ensure that you get the correct juvenile diabetes treatment, which can possibly save your life.

It's not always apparent that a child has type 1 or juvenile diabetes. Some of the symptoms seem like average childhood problems that occur. Nausea and/or vomiting can be misconstrued as the flu. Irritability, being tired and listless may be attributed to behaviors all children exhibit at one time or another. The discovery of juvenile diabetes may happen during a visit to a physician for another ailment such as a vaginal yeast infection for girls or even a routine examination.

Juvenile diabetes is classified as a chronic condition. It's a result of the body being unable to correctly deal with the sugar present in the bloodstream. This failure to suitably manage blood sugar can cause problems as your system tries to convert the sugar. This then leads to the inability of your body's cells to absorb the glucose, so it stays in the blood stream. In most instances, those who suffer from this condition will require a lifetime of insulin injections in order to break down the blood sugar.

This is still very dangerous and needed some special care and attention. The impact of juvenile diabetes is extremely fast, and can be deadly, so the instant you suspect something strange in your routine physical fitness, get yourself screened by a professional and if there is any need of treatment in any case, do not hesitate to get a treatment.
