Symptoms of Quadriplegia

By adam eric at 2010-12-20 01:18:10
Quadriplegia (also called Tetraplegia) is a person with a spinal cord injury near the top of the spine (between C1 to T1). It refers to the loss of sensation and mobility in both the upper and lower body. Spastic quadriplegia arises when all four limbs are affected with increased tone, decreased movements and brisk reflexes. It often is associated with mental retardation, visual problems and hearing impairment.

Quadriplegia can affect multiple aspects of a victim's life. They may begin experiencing difficult breathing because of a lack of control over the abdomen and chest region, and is common for quadriplegia victims to require breathing aides after their accidents. Sexual function is also subject to change after an injury resulting in quadriplegia.

symptoms of quadriplegia:

1-An inability to move the head
2-Impaired function of the torso
3-Loss of sexual function
4-Digestion problems

There are instances when catastrophic injuries truly rob individuals of their ability to enjoy their former hobbies or activities and continue to have control over their bodies. If a person is injured in an accident and becomes a quadriplegic, an injury has taken away the ability for them to use their arms and legs and occasionally the functionality of some of the internal systems in the torso.

The physical aspect of caring for a quadriplegic individual is the obvious. The patient must be lifted and rolled over so he is not lying on the same body parts for too long a period. The importance of this is to prevent bedsores, or at least keep them to a minimum. These sores, if not treated properly, can become ulcerated and dangerous. And, he must be lifted and rolled over to bathe, and sat up to eat. Be sure you have a hospital bed for the patient; it will make your life a little easier and his a little more comfortable.

An injury in the lower spine, usually from T-2, the second thoracic vertebra, can result in paraplegia, the loss of use of the legs, imposing severe restrictions in a person's life. If the paraplegia is permanent, a person must plan his/her entire life around the restrictions that come with the loss of use of their legs, including permanent use of wheelchairs.

One of the most important things that you need to do if you have been involved in an automobile accident and you have possibly suffered a neck or back injury from, is to immediately seek medical attention. When back injuries become a way of life you will then want to contact an automobile accident and spinal injury attorney who specializes in spine and spinal cord injuries like the ones that can be found in Marina del Rey and Los Angeles.

The common man of this country does not even know that he can be actually a subject to new unapproved drugs that the doctor is experimenting on with. Many consultant doctors, private nursing homes and hospitals here are only concerned about increasing the patient intake and the resulting take home at the end of the day. Peer competition amongst consultant doctors forces them into relying on family physicians who jointly support moolah related Cut-Practice.

sometimes for weeks and even months. This could result in swelling, uncontrollable bleeding, inflammation and edema, aka fluid build up which concentrates in the spinal cord area. Nontraumatic spinal cord injury MTBI, can be from arthritis, bad blood vessels, profuse internal bleeding, inflammations degenerative disk disease and other pre-existing problems with your spine.

When I would hear stories like this I guess I always felt like I was hearing about the world "out there". The "out there" where people sometimes just don't know any better, were uneducated or uninformed about such things, lacked awareness, or empathy, or just don't know how to cope with things they didn't understand and maybe feared. Where people sometimes were well-intentioned but misguided and where others were just plain mean.

The cause or causes of congenital cerebral palsy has not yet been determined. However, it is known that children born under certain conditions are at the highest risk of developing it. These conditions are: premature birth, the presence of hemorrhage in the brain, an infant requiring a ventilator for more than 4 weeks, an undersized baby who doesn't cry during the first 5 minutes after being delivered, internal system malformations in the kidneys, spine or heart and the occurrence of seizures.

The spinal nerves can suffer damage in several different ways. First, with traumatic spinal injuries, the spinal column may be torn if the backbone itself is broken. Additionally, if something goes through the vertebrae and pierces the spinal cord itself, the delicate nerves can be torn beyond repair. Also, nerve damage that causes paralysis can result from drugs as well as different disorders.

Neurosurgeons and Orthopedic surgeons are the most appropriate doctors for diagnosing back injuries. The Illinois Workers' Compensation Commission views diagnoses and treatment from neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons as more credible than diagnoses and treatment from chiropractors and internists.

In all automobile accident cases it is essential that steps be taken immediately to preserve evidence, investigate the accident in question, and to enable physicians or other expert witnesses to thoroughly evaluate any injuries. Therefore, is important to choose an experienced personal injury attorney in pursuing a claim to recover for your personal injuries.

Typically, those with quadriplegia used a pointer mounted on their head, or they gripped one in their teeth - methods that would require assistance from others to use - and in the case of the pointer held in the mouth, precluding conversation while using the pointer. Stephen Diebold, who hopes his invention will provide a better solution, has since been awarded a patent pending for the Drop Point.
