Benefits of Sprouted Foods

For kitchen use, one can basically sprout any seed, grain, nut and bean. Good spring sprouting foods are Barley, Alfalfa, Mung Beans and Wheat. Sprouting is fun and easy, and the result can be eaten in about 1 week. Kids love helping out, too. It gives them a great visual on how food grows.


When it comes to breakfast, you need something light and nutritious so that you can feel active throughout the day. And needless to say, nothing can be better than sprouted pulses. Research studies have shown that they contain more nutrients and lesser calories as compared to dried seeds. This is because there is a significant increase in the amount of vitamins, proteins, and minerals present in the seeds during the sprouting process.

There is an amazing increase in nutrients in sprouted foods when compared to their dried embryo. In the process of sprouting, the vitamins, minerals and protein increase substantially with corresponding decrease in calories and carbohydrate content. These comparisons are based on an equivalent water content in the foods measured. Analysis of dried seeds, grains and legumes shows a very low water content.

To start to grow your sprouts you must first pre soak the seeds or beans. Use room temperature purified water for the rinsing and soaking. Soaking will cease the seeds dormancy and begin new life, life that we can consume in the state of living food and living energy! Once the seed has pulled in enough water it is alive and therefore a nutritional wonder in it's own respect. At this stage enzymes are active and in some cases the seed or bean has changed from acidic to alkaline.

Seeds from which sprouts grow are potential plants just waiting for the right circumstances in which they can burst forth and realise that potential. When the seed begins to sprout, there is a veritable explosion of nutrients inside the seed. Sprouting of seeds causes a dramatic increase in the amount of vitamins, minerals and protein available, and this increase corresponds to a decrease in the level of carbohydrates and calories. For example, just half a cup of most sprouts will provide as much vitamin C as six glasses of orange juice.

Sprouting can be done at home with sprout seeds, a sprouting jar, and some water. One can start this entire process with less than twenty dollars. How it works is you start by putting a tablespoon or two of seeds into a jar. Wash these seeds with water and cover the jar. Turn it upside down at a 45 degree angle and simply let it sit there. Twice a day this rinsing process will happen. Over the course of three to six days depending on the seed, the sprouts will grow.

Growing sprouts, or "sprouting" isn't just for hippies, although the hippy era may have made the technique more popular. In just minutes per day, with a minimal amount of effort, you've got a science experiment, gardening project, and a fool-proof method to get your kids emotionally invested in green stuff! The materials required are minimal - good quality seeds and a container to rinse them in that drains well.

Sprouts have been one of my favorite condiments to add to salads and sandwiches. But some time ago I had the pleasure of growing commercial sprouts for a company that finally got it right in my mind. Because I have believed for a long time that in order to produce food with nutrition in it you must feed your plants something that is nutritious.

Place the beef, sesame oil, garlic and ginger in a bowl and mix together well. Heat the wok until very hot, after that add 1 tablespoon of the oil and swirl it around to coat the side. Add half the beef and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes, or until the beef is just cooked. Remove from the wok, add a little more oil and cook the rest of the beef. Remove all the beef from the wok.

If you are growing sprouts at home in a sprouter then allowing them some sunlight before harvesting will increase their chlorophyll content. It is this particular compound that gives plants their rich green colour and which are known to help build up blood in the body as well as cleanse it. There are some people who will sprout and grow wheatgrass shoots which contain high levels of chlorophyll and then to extract the protein rich juice from the young plantlets use a wheatgrass juicer.

To ensure that your baby develops in a healthy environment, you should keep your body as fit and well nourished as you possibly can. Do not think in terms of devising a special diet for pregnancy, it is more to do with eating a good variety of the right foods which are those that are rich in the essential nutrients.

Sproutable seeds include vegetables like beans, green peas, lentils, broccoli, cabbage, corn, kale, mustard, onion, chives, garlic, radish, pumpkin, and watercress, as well as herbs and grasses like anise, alfalfa, chia, clover, and fenugreek, and seeds such as sesame and sunflower. Do not eat potato or tomato sprouts, as they are poisonous.
